On Friday, February 7th, 2014, the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County is hosting their 3rdAnnual Chicken Wing and Micro-Brew Fest. For a $20 admission fee, you can sample chicken wings from participating local restaurants while they compete for the CAC’s Blue Ribbon Award for the best chicken wing. Mico-brew sampling will also be included in the admission fee, courtesy of Eagle Beverage of Oswego, NY.
The Chicken Wing and Microbrew Fest will be the CAC’s first fundraiser of 2014. As of January 14, 2014, nine participants have confirmed that they will be participating in the competition. More slots for participants are open. The restaurants participating in this event include The Press Box, Canale’s, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians and many others. Judges will be determining who wins the prize for the best chicken wing, but event goers will have the opportunity to vote for whose wings they like best.
This will be the third year for the Chicken Wing and Microbrew fest, and the CAC have been working to make it bigger than in years past. The event will begin at 5pm with the “Attitude Adjustment Hour”. Entertainment and music will be provided at the event. The festival is open to guests under the age of 21, identification will be checked at the door and only those over 21 will be issued a wrist band that allows them to sample micro-brews.
The Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County is a non-profit organization that is a safe, child-friendly site for the investigation, prosecution, and treatment of child abuse. All services offered by the organization are free and donations from fundraisers and sponsorships help the CAC continue to provide free services to families and reach out to the community of Oswego County. 475 children were helped by the CAC in 2013, which was a 48% increase from the year before. The CAC provides many services to families and children who are victims of abuse such as, victim and family advocacy, mental health counseling, forensic interviewing, medical evaluation, and community outreach.
“The services provided at the CAC are completely free to families and we work hard to stay up-to-date on best practices and trainings. This means that many more families are able to have access to high quality services, without having to worry about whether or not they can afford them. Donations and fundraisers go directly into assisting the CAC with continuing to help the children and families of Oswego County,” said Melanie Proper, Licensed Mental Health Counselor with the CAC
While most donations go to the services provided by the CAC, some donations go to the CAC’s snack cupboard for the children that they help. “The children at the CAC are delighted to have a juice box and prepackaged snack when they come to the CAC- many of the children we work with do not always get special treats like this and it helps provide extra nurturing and comfort! We often rely on donations to keep our snack cupboard running,” said Proper.
There will be more coming from the CAC in 2014. They are busy planning the “Fiesta de Mayo” gala for May and are organizing a walk/run for later on in the year as well as activities for this coming Harborfest.
Pre-sale tickets for the event are $20.00, tickets are $25.00 when purchased at the door the day of the event. The Chicken Wing and Micro-brew fest will take place at the Lake Ontario Conference Center at the Best Western Hotel.
