Oswego Dragon Festival to Raise Money for the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign

On Saturday, September 7th, 32 teams of community members will take to the water in the harbor at Brietbeck Park in Oswego. This is the second year for the Oswego Dragon Festival, which helped to raise over $19,000 for the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign last year.
The goal of the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign is to raise money for scholarships to provide children and families with access to the Y’s programs such as: school age childcare, the Y Day Camp, and membership and youth programs. Jackie Sheffield, said, “As the leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y works side-by-side with our neighbors every day to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.”
Despite the weather, last year’s event was a success, with many teams returning to participate again. There has been a rise in interest from the community and ten more teams have been added to this year’s roster.
Teams are composed of a mix of people from local businesses and corporations, community members, and students and faculty from SUNY Oswego. “The best part about the festival is the passion they bring to the event,” Sheffield said. The Dragon Festival is a great event where people from all aspects of the community can come together and raise money for a great cause, have fun, and get to know one another.
“A single event that brings all aspects of our community together for a cause makes for a stronger community,” Sheffield said. “It’s also a great way to tell the Y’s story as we work together for a common cause.
One new addition to the 2013 Dragon Festival is the Dragon Marketplace. Here, crafters, vendors, and non-profit organizations will set up tents for the community to browse during the event. A second new attraction will be Dragonland, a place where children’s minds can run rampant and they can enjoy the customs and cultures of both China and Oswego, NY. The Children’s Museum of Oswego will also be in Dragonland, with their traveling attractions and activities for youngsters to participate in.
The YMCA hopes that the Oswego Dragon Festival will continue to happen and grow in the years to come. We agree and hope that this festival and the Strong Kids Campaign continues to help enrich the lives of children and families in our community.
